Times of India :: Training for IPS probationers gets a lot tougher with Krav Maga

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/nB3qh)

Times of India

HYDERABAD: Terrorism has made life unimaginably tough for the latest batch of IPS probationers what with new combat techniques being introduced into the training schedule. The latest addition for budding police officers at the Sardar Vallabhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) is "Krav Maga" an Israeli hand-to-hand combat technique that gives the fighter more aggressive endurance.

But it is not just with "Krav Maga" that the 61st batch of IPS probationers who pass out on November 6, 2009 have an edge over the alumni of the prestigious institution. The 91 probationers, including 23 women, for the first time also had to develop their skills in scuba diving. Certainly fun was simply out of question. "It was all about learning to not only explore the unknown waters and surviving hazards but also acquiring the skill to rescue," said an officer engaged in training the probationers.

With a thorough revamp of the basic course syllabus for IPS probationers on the cards, the introduction of "Krav Maga" and scuba diving is only an indication of how the nearly one-year training will become more demanding.

Being cut off from civilization for a few days and getting lost in the deep and dangerous jungles of Tamil Nadu was probably not what the probationers, had bargained for when they got into the IPS but they slugged it all. Leading the change in training is director K. Vijay Kumar who in an earlier avatar as chief of TN Special task force had tracked down sandalwood smuggler Veerappan. "The jungle experience need not necessarily make the trainees physically tough. But it certainly makes them mentally tough," Vijay Kumar told TOI.

Not everyone could master the "Krav Maga" during the two-month training module but it certainly raised the standards of training for IPS probationers. "Krav Maga" is basically a tactical defence skill which stresses on threat neutralisation, simultaneous defensive and offensive manoeuvres, and aggressive endurance in a "him-or-me" context, according to NPA officials.

MyBangalore.com :: Fighting fit with Krav Maga

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/xEJ9D)

by NISHAL LAMA | 26. October 2009

Krav Maga is a form of martial arts that is used by some of the top defence agencies around the world. Find out how Bangalore’s taking up this latest fitness fad.

Krav Maga, a form of martial arts from Israel is attracting a lot of attention in the city. With only one centre located in Richmond Town, people from all over the city, irrespective of age and gender are thronging the center to learn Krav Maga .

The techniques used in Krav Maga are derived from street-fighting, and makes the most to enhance one’s reflex action. Frank J, a Krav Maga instructor says the Israeli martial art is different from any other kind of martial art as it involves more real-life situations. “Krav Maga teaches you on how to use your muscles in the most efficient manner, using your own reflexes to fight back. Our body responds to all kinds of external attack, and it’s in our subconscious mind. The right utilization of your own reflexes can save you from a lot of danger.”

Frank feels fear can put one in a lot of danger. “When you have a tight working schedule, all throughout the week, you tend to follow a different lifestyle; it was the same with me when I was working for an I.T. company a few years ago. But then, it was after having met few officers from Indian Air force, who educated me about this free-form martial art, that I decided to work on it, which I thought was more productive than what I had been doing then,” said Frank.

It’s after six years of rigorous practice and hard work today Frank masters the art, and has been avidly working as a trainer at his institute in Bangalore for almost two years now. He says, “I am really grateful to the officers from the Indian Air Force who made me acquainted with Krav Maga. I also thank Vicky Kapoor, Chief Instructor from International Krav Maga Federation, India, who had helped me to understand about this art of fighting.

It has given me the self confidence to protect my self & my near & dear ones

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/63eli)

paulKrav Maga Practitioner : Major Paul Devass

Age: 43 years

My professional life started with getting commissioned into the Army & experiencing the hot spots and thereafter continuing my life in the Corporate, as a Security professional.

Being part of the Security profession I understood to a great extent the risks faced by the commoner in their daily life & how it would be foolish to depend on the state machinery to be our shield to mitigate the risks. As a Security Professional, I was always looking out for methods which could be adopted by in house security personnel & also help in safeguarding the women employees. My search ended with Krav Maga.

Krav Maga has given me the self confidence to protect my self & my near & dear ones in times of crisis coupled with the intense physical workout during the classes, has really become a fulcrum to my reaching new fitness levels, in spite of being now only a Corporate Warrior. My resting pulse rate has reached the early 70s. Additionally for me weight loss - I had never pursued weight reduction as a goal but these workouts have worked wonders in this direction.

This martial arts can easily be learnt by all men & women. The training sessions are all built around realistic daily life situations with solutions to mitigate the risks. I should give a huge credit to the instructors at Mumbai especially Sadashiv who has worked patiently & tirelessly to make me & my other class mates reach their present level of proficiency. I would recommend Krav Maga as a way of life to all.

Krav Maga has set such standards of effectiveness for martial arts training all over the world

(My Original Blog Post: http://ping.fm/A3O5s)

Krav Maga Practioner: Gaurav Mhatre

Age: 22 years.

Participating in a brawl with a few tough only to have myself humbled, lately, did more than enough to motivate me on building up at least some kind skills in self defense. Prior to that incident I had always ignored my physical vulnerability. And so after a detailed search over self defense, I realized that it was the world of modern martial arts, with most martial arts schools having done with all the tedious and time consuming Katas and weird jargon.

Lately many western schools only focus on important aspects of martial arts, with techniques borrowed from a variety of styles, and compiled together to train the pupils with the most effective skills. I learned that 'Krav Maga' is a style which has set such standards of effectiveness for martial arts training all over the world.

After reading much debate over its effectualness compared to other styles, I knew there was no way I was going to miss it. I gathered all the information about Krav Maga training in my city and enrolled promptly. And here's what i think of the training so far...

The Krav Maga approach is very  utilitarian, with pupils being seasoned to attacking and defending right from day 1. Prior to the training, we undergo a series of physical and aerobic exercises which encourage us to push our strength to limits. We are taught to harness as well as deal with many dangerous moves which are illegal in other martial arts styles, but are perfectly valid in real life scenarios (like the gruesome groin kick).

The fellow pupils and instructors are quiet dedicated to the training which makes it fun along with learning.

On a final note... Despite being engaged in Krav Maga just recently, I already feel as if I have a few aces up my sleeve if it ever comes to defending myself again on the streets.

Age: 30 yrs

I first heard about Krav Maga from Ajit sir and Paul Devassy.

I would like to thank them and the Mumbai Krav Maga team to have given me a chance to fulfill my childhood dream of learning some kind of Martial Art form. I had almost forgotten about that for the last 20 years, but have always been fascinated by the thought of techniques to use one's body as a weapon.

I have always been athletic by nature, but it is during the classes that I understood how much more fitter I could make myself. It's a huge kick to surpass your own physical abilities.

Also, to learn some basic facts about our body’s natural movements, like all-round and 360 degrees defense, freeing oneself from chokes or executing perfect punches and kicks which can be fatal or atleast can shock the opponent.

I have always been a person who would like to stand my own against wrong doings and unfortunately some of that may lead to fights as well. But just the righteousness is not enough to defend. Now I know that I'll be able to stand up for my beliefs and fight it out if need be. Conditioning of my body will surely help in self defense or rather a counter attack full of stamina would help me spring a surprise over the attacker.

I had read that Krav Maga was different from other forms of Martial arts. But now I know how effective it is, in it's quick, minimal and lethal implementation.

Once again a big thanks to dedicated trainers and participants of this team. I see everyone in my class as a teacher and they help me learn something new each week.

Every chance I get, I would suggest my friends and relatives to learn and practice Krav Maga for the benefits that it offers.

Learning to give it back

CHENNAI: As racial attacks are becoming nightmarish for the families of students in Australia, Sreeam says, “The Government of India can pressurise the Australian government to put an end to these attacks, but an individual by himself has to go that extra mile to repulse such assaults. That is when my years of training in the self-defence technique of Krav Maga came across as a solution.” A crash course was introduced in August, wherein training was given to minimise damage to self and to neutralise the attacker. “Krav Maga does not require stringent discipline. The technique by itself lays more emphasis on defence and not on attack,” says Sreeram. The crash course is for 40 hours with 20 classes of 2 hours each. Here students are taught to understand how a crisis develops and to prevent escalation.

Shantanu Joshi, an 18-year-old who attended the course before heading to the US shares, “It improved my endurance and fitness levels. I learnt a lot of practical techniques. Avoiding a fight is the best thing to do.” Lalit Murali a student considering going to Australia for high studies says, “It has become essential to learn combat and self-defence in the climate we live in,” and continues to add, “I had to equip myself to make my parents feel safe and also to strengthen myself.” Contact Sreeram at 9340006600.
